Smoked chocolate and scotch milkshake with a chocolate cookie crumble.
Less than two miles and a haul up to Capital Hill in Seattle is a Mecca of an overlooked dessert. At the corner of Bellevue and Denny, one can find a corner entry to Hot Cakes.
As you enter, a wave of warm, bakery-fresh chocolate lava cake hits your face. A wall menu boasts a modest collection of beverages and boozy milkshakes, ranging from seasonal lemonades and chocolate-whiskey malts.
When we arrived, despite beating the midnight oil burners on a Thirsty Thursday, the line was already around the counter, out the door and a few humans deep to their patio. As we made our way in, Alex and I had the difficult decision of picking what lava cake to order. Do we go classic with chocolate decadence? Should we try the popular S’More, or go out on a limb and have a chocolate strawberry? In the end, we didn’t choose any of the lava cakes. Oh no, instead, we ordered the unexpected local berry cobbler.
From the menu board’s description, the cobbler was local blackberries and blueberries, topped with a crusty buttermilk biscuit and raw sugar. For the evening’s drinks of choice, we ordered a Hayton berry smash and spiked lemonade.
The wait wasn’t too long to order, but finding a space to hang out after took some time. As mentioned, the place was busy AF for 10 pm, but eventually, a table opened up and we got to dive into the warm, gooey berry and biscuit. And, to our surprise, it came out topped with vanilla ice cream.
While we sadly forgot to take our PAFP photo that evening, I went back a few days later to try their newest boozy shake, the Smoked Chocolate Scotch.
