Have you ever imagined mixing Matcha powder into waffle batter and slathering it in ice cream?
The inventive minds at Hiro Asian Kitchen have taken Asian fushion and brunch and made a beautiful, delicious baby named GET IN MY MOUTH.
The weekend of my birthday, Alex and I decided to go on one of our foodie adventures, since it has been a while on our usual brunch trips. Revisiting the list we narrowed down for Easter, we chose the visit Hiro Asian Kitchen in downtown St. Louis.
Hiro had a club-like vibe when walking in, even with the mid-morning light streaming through the front door. The booths are pushed back into semi-private alcoves, decorated with ceramic bowls as wall art.
To begin, I order the staple of all brunch cocktails: the bottomless mimosa. The glasses are very deep, but I think I can knock out three or so. Alex chooses does not choose his usual Bloody Mary, and instead tries a Buddha Kiss. It has mezcal, orange marmalade, grapefruit juice and jalapeño in it, so still right up his spicy alley.
Now for the part where we drool.
Have you ever found a waffle tinted green and wafting the smell of warm green tea into your nostrils? The Matcha Waffle, topped with vanilla bean ice cream, coconut crème fraiche and seasonal fruits, and lightly drizzled with syrup. Still hot off the iron, but cooling quickly with the ice cream, it was sweet and tangy.
Alex took no prisoners and went for the Breakfast Ramen. A large bowl came out, filled to the brim with salty bone broth. The wheat noodles floated neatly beside crispy pork belly, shiitake mushrooms and a poached egg. The little curls of steam lifted the smell of herbed broth between the two of us.
Somehow, even with bottomless mimosas and a giant bowl of ramen, we both made it to the clean plate club... and desperately needed a nap afterwards.
